After a person is arrested they are usually
taken to the police precinct where the arrest occurred. This is a critical stage for your loved one. The police should not give any
information other than name, address, and
family member to contact with out the
aid of an attorney.
|
From the precinct the person is taken to central booking in the borough of arrest, it is between 16-24 hours before they are seen by a judge. This is an important time to contact an attorney. The attorney can guide you and the person detained through the rest of the arraignment process. |
Arraignment – the first appearance before the judge is called an arraignment. At this point your family member or loved one faces the charges and whether or not the judge will set bail. This is another critical stage of the proceeding and it is important to have the right attorney.
|
Post arraignment – after the arraignment your family member or loved one will be given a new court date in either a felony court part or a misdemeanor court part. This date is usually about two weeks after the initial arraignment. This is an excellent time to contact an attorney to discuss your family member or loved one’s case.
